Is SEO high paying? Yes, if you move beyond basic junior keyword research. US specialists average roughly $60,000 to $82,000 depending on the source, directors about $113,000 to $149,000, and VP of SEO jobs about $192,000, while most independent consultants charge $150 an hour or less.

What is a marketing engineer? David Quaid SEOtv answers in four minutes, and the idea matters here, because the pay in this trade rises with what you can build and fix.
SEO salaries by level differ a lot by source, so ranges are safer than a single number. The figures below are US, and they come from salary sites read on November 1, 2026 and from 2024 job postings.
| Level | Average pay | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Entry level | $44,597 | Payscale, 61 profiles |
| Specialist | $60,355 to $82,392 | Payscale, Indeed |
| Senior specialist | $74,283 | ZipRecruiter |
| Manager | $80,800 to $115,927 | Previsible, Glassdoor |
| Technical SEO | $97,500 | Previsible postings |
| Director | $113,333 to $148,982 | ZipRecruiter, Glassdoor |
| Head of SEO | $147,278 | Glassdoor, 21 reports |
| VP of SEO | $191,850 | Previsible postings |
Treat the top of that range with care. Glassdoor now shows $107,992 for specialists, up from about $64,939 reported in January 2026, and Indeed moved from about $61,989 to $82,392 in the same stretch. Neither site explains the jump. The US government doesn't track SEO on its own. The nearest job, market research analyst, has a median of $78,760 for May 2025, with the lowest tenth under $43,390 and the highest over $155,480.
Few SEO jobs pay six figures, despite what the career pages imply. The Previsible State of SEO Jobs report found "12 percent of open SEO positions offered salaries of $100,000 or more" in 2024, and the median posting was $82,000. That median fell through the year, from $90,000 in the first quarter to $75,000 in the fourth, and SEOjobs.com found only 18% of listings gave a figure at all. The strongest pay sits with people who run things, so strategic enterprise leads and directors clear six figures while most specialists don't.
SEO consultants charge far less per hour than the big numbers online suggest. In Ahrefs' pricing poll of 439 providers, the most common rate was $75 to $100, and 90% charged $150 or less. Only 4.1% charged $201 or more. Advisory rates of $200 to $500 do exist at the very top, but no public survey shows them as routine. The poll is global and a couple of years old, so rates have probably moved. Ahrefs estimated consultancies at about $171 an hour, agencies at $99 and freelancers at $72.
Founders are the exception, and the data on them is thin. A small SE Ranking survey put the median business owner at $130,000 worldwide. The real upside in this trade tends to come from owning the thing that ranks, which is a business, not a salary.
How much freelance SEOs make comes down to billable hours, and no reliable income survey exists. At $100 an hour, 20 billed hours a week grosses $104,000 a year before tax and costs. Where you live matters: in the Ahrefs poll, 66.7% of US and Canadian providers charged $75 to $200, while 85.7% in India charged $30 or less. Experience matters too, with average rates rising from about $73 for people in business up to two years to about $118 for those past 10. ZipRecruiter's $95,500 consultant figure is modeled from employee job ads, so it doesn't tell you what a freelancer earns.
The skills that pay most in SEO are moving toward AI and strategy. In Previsible's 2024 data, AI was named in 56% of listings paying $250,000 to $300,000, against 17% of those paying $50,000 to $100,000. Link building tended to appear in roles under $100,000, content SEO roles averaged $67,500, and analysts $75,000. Strategic work pays more than production work, whichever way you cut it. David G Quaid's view, in the video on this page, is that the job is closer to marketing engineering than to keyword lists.
SEO can be a stressful job, though no recent study measures it. The best figure is old: a survey reported in 2020 found under half of SEO specialists felt secure, and about 80% worried that algorithm changes would hurt their careers. Anyone who has watched a core update land on a client site will find that easy to believe.
Whether SEO will be replaced by AI is unknown, but the job mix is already shifting. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% growth from 2025 to 2035 for market research analysts, much faster than average. Inside SEO, content listings dropped 28% during 2024 while SEO manager listings rose 58%, and requests for AI skills went from 16% to 21% of listings. Semrush found AI mentioned in 31% of senior listings and 22.3% of the rest. David's take on the wider question is on whether SEO is dead or evolving.
It is hard to get a job in SEO at the start, because juniors made up only 14% of postings in 2024, and agencies held the most junior openings. Listings fell 37% in Q1 2024 against a year earlier, though entry level rose 1%. Two things help a career changer: 65% of 2024 postings asked for no formal degree, and 34% were remote. A site you have ranked yourself counts for more than a certificate, which is why can a beginner do SEO starts with a test site.
