Is SEO Dead or Evolving in 2026?

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026? It is evolving, and it is definitely not dead. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) sit on top of search and don't replace it. What has changed is the payoff: more places to appear, and fewer clicks on the searches where an AI answer shows up.

Top SEO Myths of 2026

Top SEO myths of 2026 get taken apart one at a time in this video from David Quaid SEOtv, with Google's SEO Starter Guide as the reference point.

Did SEO Turn Into AEO and GEO?

SEO did not turn into AEO and GEO, whatever the people selling those letters would like you to think. Google's guide to AI search names both terms, calls the work "optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO", and says its AI features are "rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems". Danny Sullivan said it more briefly in 2025: "Good SEO is good GEO".

David G Quaid makes the same case from the other side. In his words, answer engines "sit on top of search engines", which makes AEO "a by-product of strong SEO, not a replacement". He compares an LLM to a restaurant and search to the farm that supplies it. Not everyone on these shelves agrees. The Edward Show's notes say James Dooley runs a separate GEO and AEO team, and you can hear that debate for yourself.

What Changed in Search in 2026?

What changed in search in 2026 is how often an AI answer sits above the results. AI Overviews now appear on about 43% to 48% of Google queries depending on the tracker, up from 13% to 20% a year earlier, and people click less when one shows.

Google disputes the gloomier readings. Liz Reid, who runs Search, said in August 2025 that total organic click volume was relatively stable, and Alphabet says searches are growing. Both can hold at once if there are more searches and fewer clicks on each one.

Is AI Replacing Google Search?

AI is not replacing Google search on any traffic number so far. Google holds 91.05% of search engine use worldwide on StatCounter, though that count leaves chatbots out. In Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark of 115,254 sites, AI assistants sent 0.43% of visits against 23.96% from Google. Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Journal put search at 3.3 billion monthly visitors and AI chatbots at 655 million, with 95% of ChatGPT users also using Google. Alphabet reported Search revenue up 12% for Q3 2026, with its CEO calling query growth the highest in five years.

Is Link Building Dead in 2026?

Link building is not dead in 2026, but the cheap end of it has become a poor bet. Google's spam policies still name "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes", and it has run four spam updates and two core updates so far this year. David says that at the bottom of the market "80% of the backlinks are dying off within a month". He also says you do need backlinks, and that the lasting ones come from partners who gain too, a point he covers in his SEO strategy for a new website.

What Wins in SEO Now?

What wins in SEO now is close to what always won: pages that match how people search, topical authority and links from real relationships. The new part is where you have to appear. David's version of the difference is that SEO may need first place, while GEO may mean "owning first, second, and third place".

Ranking in the top 10 no longer promises a citation. Ahrefs found about 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also sat in the top 10 for the original query, down from about 76% in July 2025, and it suspects fan-out queries, the related searches an AI runs behind the scenes. So the job is to rank for those too. Building a thin page for each one is the trap, since Google says that "violates Google's scaled content abuse spam policy".

Brand is a harder call. Some marketers say a strong brand is enough for AI tools to find you. David calls that nonsense, and says a company has to publish pages that place it in its market, as he explains in AI Overviews SEO.

Will SEO Exist in 5 Years?

Whether SEO will exist in 5 years is anyone's guess, so here are the signals in place of a forecast. Alphabet says query growth is the fastest in five years. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 7% growth from 2025 to 2035 for market research analysts, the nearest job category. On the other side, publishers surveyed by the Reuters Institute expect search traffic to fall by more than 40% over three years. More searches and fewer clicks add up to harder work, which is a different thing from no work.

Is SEO Dying With AI?

SEO is not dying with AI, though the clicks are shrinking on the searches where AI answers appear. David's advice is blunt: AI Overviews are "just a reality of the world that we live in", so accept it and move on. Bruce Clay, the father of SEO, said much the same in his last interview, calling GEO and AIO extensions of SEO. For both sides of the argument, the GEO and AI search shelf has every camp, and AEO vs GEO vs SEO has David's case in full.
